Raglan machine tools are no longer in business having been taken over by their neighbour and competitor in Nottingham , Myford. It has been suggested that Myford. bought them out to kill off competition but I don't know if this is true or not what I do know however is that my mill is marked as being made by Myford. and has a Myford serial number. The feature of the Raglan machines that separates them from most other machine tools is that the have a mechanical variable speed drive from the motor to the spindles. This is achieved by having two variable diameter cone pulleys connected by a wide V-belt. As the diameter of one pulley is increased by moving the two flanges closer together the other pulley reduces in diameter as its two sides move apart thus changing the ratio between them. The lathe spindle speed varies steplessly from 270 to 1750rpm without stopping the lathe and thus the spindle speed can be altered to suit whatever diameter is being cut. This is very useful if a facing cut is being taken across a large diameter bar as the speed can be altered during the cut.
Detailed information on the Raglan and many other lathes can be found at Tony Griffith's excellent site :-
A few people have E-mailed asking for details of parts and spares availability for the Raglan Lathe. Listed below are suppliers I have used and links to a web site if they have one.
